Administration of Marital Trusts

The federal and Massachusetts Marital Deduction is an estate planning cornerstone for estates of married individuals. A typical estate plan for married individuals will create a marital deduction trust. We will focus our remarks on the administration of a Marital Deduction Trust (“MDT”).
Speaker Biographies
Eric Hayes is Counsel in Goodwin Proctor’s Trusts & Estate Planning practice, focusing on estate and trust administration for individuals, banks, trust companies, and professional fiduciaries. He brings more than 30 years of fiduciary and private banking experience, including leadership roles at State Street Bank, Wells Fargo Private Bank, and other financial institutions. Mr. Hayes also played an active role in the development of key Massachusetts trust and fiduciary laws, including the Massachusetts Uniform Trust Code and Prudent Investor Act.
Bonnie Loedel is Senior Vice President and Senior Fiduciary Officer at Rockland Trust, where she oversees trust and estate administration. With more than 25 years of experience in financial services, she has served as a fiduciary officer, wealth advisor, trust officer, and trust and estate attorney. Bonnie earned her bachelor's degree from Binghamton University and was inducted into the tennis hall of fame in 1997. She has her Masters of Public Health from UCLA and a JD from Boston University School of Law. She is a trustee of the Harwich Conservation Trust and resides in Harwich with her husband.
